Paying with WeChat and Alipay in China: A How‑to Guide
From Beijing Airports
Recommended apps:
AMap (Gaode Map) is the most widely used navigation app in China. The AMap Global version offers an English interface and lets you search destinations in English. It provides accurate directions for driving, public transit, and walking. It also has a built‑in ride‑hailing feature that calls cars from multiple platforms at once. For extra peace of mind, download offline maps of Beijing before you head out – they work even without a data connection.
DiDi is China’s go‑to ride‑hailing app – think of it as the local equivalent of Uber. Download the DiDi China (international version) for a full English interface, overseas phone number registration, and international credit card support. The in‑app chat automatically translates messages between you and the driver, so language won’t be a problem.
A quick tip: Both apps are available on the App Store and Google Play – just search for “DiDi China” and “AMAP Global”. And remember, Google Maps is blocked in China, so AMap is your essential replacement for getting around Beijing.
You can also hail a ride in Alipay. Here’s how:
1. Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK)
(1) By taxi:
On any taxi app, set as your destination: Zhongguanyuan Global Village PKU (北京大学中关新园). Around 35 km (1-hour drive, when there’s no traffic jam).
(2) Public Transportation:
Take the Airport Express from Terminal 2 or Terminal 3 to Sanyuanqiao Station. The fare is 25 RMB.
Transfer to Subway Line 10 (direction: Taiyanggong) and ride to Haidianhuangzhuang Station.
Transfer to Subway Line 4 (direction: Anheqiaobei) and ride to East Gate of Peking University Station.
Exit via Exit C and walk south for about 300 meters to reach Zhongguanyuan Global Village.
Total time: about 1 hour 30 minutes
Total fare: about 30 RMB
Airport Express operating hours: Terminal 3: 6:22 AM – 10:52 PM; Terminal 2: 6:36 AM – 11:10 PM
payment for Beijing Metro:
All gates on all Beijing Metro lines support contactless entry with overseas-issued bank cards. Simply locate the sensor area marked with logos such as Visa® and Mastercard® on the gate. Hold your physical card or a mobile device with your foreign card added (e.g., Apple Pay, Google Pay) close to it. Once you hear the beep, you can pass through smoothly, just like local commuters!

2. Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX)
(1) By taxi:
On any taxi app, set as your destination: Zhongguanyuan Global Village PKU (北京大学中关新园). Around 67 km (1 hour and 10 minutes - drive, when there’s no traffic jam).
(2) Public Transportation:
Take the Daxing Airport Express to Caoqiao Station. The fare is 35 RMB.
Transfer to Subway Line 19 (direction: Mudanyuan) and ride to Ping'anli Station.
Transfer to Subway Line 4 (direction: Anheqiaobei) and ride to East Gate of Peking University Station.
Exit via Exit C and walk south for about 300 meters to reach Zhongguanyuan Global Village.
Total time: about 1 hour 30 minutes
Total fare: about 40 RMB
