About Peking University
Peking University (PKU) is a comprehensive and national key university in China. The campus, known as "Yan Yuan"（the garden of Yan）, stands near to the Summer Palace and the Yuanming Yuan (Old Summer Palace), featuring a beautiful traditional Chinese architecture style. An excellent transportation network of bus and subway puts PKU within easy reach of urban center, airport and major tourist attractions.
PKU has been a leading institution in China’s higher education since its very establishment in 1898. Over the past century, it has developed into a comprehensive institution of higher learning, embracing diverse branches of knowledge such as basic and applied sciences, social sciences and the humanities, and sciences of medicine, management, and education. Its inclusiveness of liberal arts and sciences highlights the University’s long-standing strength in a well-balanced disciplinary structure.
PKU is also known for comprehensively developed students and highly qualified teachers and researchers. According to the latest statistics, the university has 14,576 undergraduate students, 14,783 master degree candidates and 9,400 doctoral candidates. Among the 6,711 full-time faculties, 2,247 are professors and 2,144 are associate professors, along with 67 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and 11 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

P.S. Peking and Beijing are the old and new name of the same city. The word “Peking” stemmed from the Wade-Giles transcription system, which was based on the pronunciation from some local dialects of China. Peking University employed that word since 1912. The Chinese government decided to adopt the Scheme of the Pinyin Romanization System in 1958, which is the official phonetic system for transcribing the Mandarin pronunciations of Chinese characters into the Latin alphabet. The word "Beijing" is from that new scheme, and now has been used as the city's name worldwide. But the usage of “Peking” can still be seen in some proper nouns such as Peking Man and Peking Duck.
